The second generation Padfone has been released by Asus in Taiwan. There is no doubt that it is an innovative product. Asus Padfone is still the only smartphone-tablet hybrid device from a mainstreem manufacturer until now. The dividing line between phone and tablet is more and more vague.
Asus Padfone 2 has innovations.
- Compared with the original, the new one is much lighter at 649g and does away with the Padfone Station Dock, the third component of the original Padfone which adds a keyboard. At the same time, the handset display size is lager, from 4.3 inch to 4.7 inch and the Super IPS+HD display make colors vibrant.
- The new Padfone 2 is also more powerful, sporting the new quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, supported by 2,140 mAh battery.
- For some strange reason, Asus decided to use a customized version of the micro-USB port of the Padfone 2 and Padfone 2 Station. While you can still use a normal micro-USB cable to charge (and it does seem secure), we noticed that you could wiggle the port (which may result in a freak accident and you snapping the cable/port.
- Speaking of the camera, it records 720p at a whopping 60fps, which is outstanding, and 1080p at 30fps, and can take up to 100 continuous full-resolution images.
- The Padfone 2 (main smartphone component) is priced at $616/$684/$750 for the 16GB/32GB/64GB version. Sadly, there isn’t a microSD card expansion slot. The Padfone Station add-on (the slate component) will retail for $307.
