Comparison Between Microsoft Surface and Apple iPad

Microsoft on Monday finally had its Apple moment. It unveiled a family of home-brewed tablets to rival Apple's iPad at an extremely hush-hush event here in Los Angeles shrouded in mystery and speculation. Microsoft is taking a huge leap with a mobile-friendly tablet, built on its new Window 8 operating system, which rolls out this fall.

The Microsoft Surface Pro and RT tablets will be designed in-house. The company is stepping into the tablet market at a critical juncture when growth in PC sales is slowing and consumer interest in iPads is soaring. Even some tablets built on Google's rival Android mobile operating system, such as the Amazon Kindle Fire, are selling strongly.

Microsoft said the smallest Surface tablet is 9.3 millimeters thick and weighs 1.5 pounds, which is similar to Apple's iPad, at 9.4 millimeters thick and 1.44 pounds. The Surface has a 10.6-inch screen compared with the iPad's 9.7-inch screen. Microsoft also emphasized the use of the Surface with a keyboard, a convertible usage model that the company has helped champion and Apple has publicly discounted.

Since the first Microsoft Surface models hasn't been come out until Windows 8 is generally available, we can only get small parts of its specs. And let's compare them with iPad.

View Office Documents
Microsoft Office will run perfectly on Surface, depending on its Windows 8 operating system. But iPad can't.
For iPad, iWork can help users to work at it, though It's not free and not strong as Microsoft Office. eg. some animations, embedded audios and videos are not able to be played in Keynote. But there is still some ways to view powerpoint on iPad normally. And, if you need, you can also convert iWork documents to Microsoft Office documents.
